Elm York has been carefully monitoring the evolving worldwide coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, which has spread throughout New York State and in particular, throughout New York City. We have taken extensive measures to protect the safety and well-being of our residents, staff, and visitors.
VISITING: We understand that visiting friends and family is an important part of maintaining relationships, however, we also recognize that the population we serve is among the most vulnerable. As a result, we have temporarily suspended all visiting based upon Department of Health and CDC guidelines. Only authorized essential personnel are allowed access to our facility.
Friends and Families and Residents are encouraged to remain in contact with each other through writing, video chat and phone calls. We are able to provide assistance to facilitate such contacts as frequently as desired and in the manner preferred.
INFECTION CONTROL: Staff receive ongoing infection control training, direction and supervision. The risks of contracting COVID-19 are greatly reduced when common-sense measures are consistently taken to limit contact and prevent the transfer of infection. Accordingly, Elm York has instituted a wide range of practices recommended by the CDC to the spread of COVID-19 contagion. These include, but are not limited to the following:
All staff and residents are required to maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from one another. This has necessitated that all meals, snacks, activities and assistance with medication take place in the residents’ room. Additionally, residents are strongly requested to self-quarantine in their room to prevent proximity to others.
All staff are screened when they arrive to work. Their temperature is taken and they are asked if they have any health symptoms related to COVID-19. If they have a fever and/or symptoms, they are sent home for appropriate follow-up with their physician. Residents are screened every day as well. Any concerns are reported the residents’ primary care physician.
All staff as well as all residents have been trained and regularly reminded to practice proper hand hygiene, as per CDC guidelines.
All staff have been trained (and receive daily and on-going reinforcement) on the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks, gloves, gowns, eye protection, etc. Residents are also requested to wear a mask when they are not alone.
More frequent cleaning of all areas, with particular emphasis on repeated cleaning of “touch points” (handrails, door knobs, elevator buttons, etc.). Alcohol based hand sanitizer is plentiful and amply located throughout the building for staff and residents, including at the entrance to the building.
